Holding a yard or garage sale is one lucrative option for getting rid of things that a household is no longer using. While homeowners may find no use for these items any longer, however, others might still find value in it. It also doesn’t hurt that the original owner earns extra money in the process of relieving their home of their old stuff. This method isn’t practical all the time, though. Sometimes, one has to know when going for junk removal is the better option.
Such is the case concerning a property on the corner of 114 Street and 78 Avenue in south Edmonton. Global News Canada reports that the property’s front lawn and backyard are full of items on display for the yard sale, which has been going allegedly since July. While it was welcomed eagerly when the sale opened, now, though, it’s just nothing more but an “unsightly” nuisance and, not to mention, a health hazard, what with pests and rodents dropping by as well.
Edmonton’s Garage/Yard Sale Limitations
Only up to three garage sales are allowed from one location in a single calendar year and each can only last for up to three consecutive days. In the past, sales that will go over the set limits can do so with a development permit and business license. According to the latest update though, the city of Edmonton no longer gives licenses to garage sales.
Aside from the limitations in duration and frequency, many more rules govern garage sales, including liability for items sold and placement of garage signs. Still, the sale highlighted in the news item above broke the rules by the duration alone.
Community Standards Bylaws
The garage sale limitations are connected to the city’s goal of maintaining the order and cleanliness of its communities. Another part of this is the responsibilities of each property owner in maintaining their respective properties. The Bylaws set certain standards so that each property will not be a nuisance to other residents of the community.
A huge part of maintaining these standards is clearing the property of trash—waste materials from construction, broken down appliances, or items no longer needed. These can accumulate separately from everyday garbage and they can create unsightly conditions, or even attract pests leading to health risks, such as with what is happening in the long overdue yard sale.
Dumpster rental is usually needed in order to have an efficient way to remove large amounts of waste. Moreover, some high-risk items need containers that are more durable than usual trash bins. Also, rental services such as Bins by Jo do recycle items as much as possible to align with the environmental initiatives in Edmonton.
