Decluttering the home is not just for spring. While most of us take advantage of the longer, warmer days to fling open windows and doors and do all sorts of deep cleaning activities in the home, there is no reason why you cannot spruce up your home in-between times. Obviously, you do need to schedule this wisely as no-one would enjoy open windows in the middle of an Edmonton winter when the temperature drops to double figures below freezing!
It is best to clear out your home one room at a time. This way, you still have the rest of the house looking reasonable and useable by guests who may drop by. Clear each room completely and clean the floor thoroughly.
Next, put back in all the big pieces of furniture that inform what the room is: table and chairs for dining room, bed for bedroom, and so on. While the room is still a basic shell, with only the main pieces of furniture, plan out how you want the room to look. Making the plan at this stage allows you to move the furniture around and achieve the best look, without any ‘small stuff’ to get in the way.
Once the room is laid out satisfactorily, add in the smaller items: ornaments, vases, etc. Be cautious not to rush to add every back in, or you will end up with the same uncomfortable overcrowding that caused the deep clean in the first place.
When selecting items, make sure you understand why you want to keep things: is it sentimental, a gift from a now-deceased loved one? Is it romantic, a gift from a loved one? If you answer yes to both of these, but really do not think the item fits in the place you have allocated it, consider putting it into storage for a while, or until you find the perfect place for it.
Anything that is unnecessary, not sentimental and not valuable should be binned! It can be a wrench to throw away something for no particular reason, but if it serves no purpose other than to take up space, throwing it away is an excellent idea.
In some cases, the amount of belongings to throw away can become a mountain of junk after you’ve cleaned your entire home. Employing the junk removal services of an experienced company like Bins By Jo Ltd. would be ideal for carting away items you no longer need. Be sure to consult one prior to starting with your clean-up, so you can determine how large of a bin you’ll need.
